Current needed is less than 1A.  Let's say that I want to go as high as =
12V.
This is what I can do, I can simply connect a 7805 or similar regulator =
and
drop the voltage to 5 and then to 3 (with another regulator).  I will =
need
both the 3V and 5V in the circuit.  The important thing for me is that, =
I
would like this circuit to work whether a 3V, 5V or 12V power supply is
connected.

I can even give up the 12V if there is way to make the circuit work with
either 3V or 5V power connection.
