When I tried knoppix several months ago, it failed to detect my 3com network card. This could be the problem you are seeing. I didn't give it much thought, and pretty much gave up on knoppix after that. It's not like it was a strange 3com card or anything. It was a 3c905, and it's popular enough that you would think that knoppix would have drivers for it, but I don't think it did.
