Hi John
When I start Knoppix it looks like I do not have any thing from the network
card, no receive transmit signals. I have tried to configure the internet
connection using DHCP and it could not find anything, and the modem was not
being used at all. I tried also to configure the connection manually by
giving it the IP address, netmask and so on but it still could not do it the
other thing it asked for was broadcast address which I could not find, I did
in XP CMD IPCONFIG/ALL to find the values. could it be the network card? the
only thing is it works under windows with no problem.

just open the console and type in

nslookup www.yahoo.com

it should print a long list of ip addresses.

DHCP is a protocol to get the network configuration for your running
machine.
Like ip , netmask,dns and gateway.
