I have one of them old and used CE devices. It is a Siemens SX-45 and it runs CE 2.0 but the 3.0 development environment works well for it. I got i for about $150 with a GPS receiver a 256K SD card and some other stuff. It has a bult in GPS/GPRS so it can be used as a cellular also. I like it very much even if its old technology, bad backlight on the display etc. But the most important of all is that I can use it for programs I developed for my customers. They often use an Ipaq but I can do all of the development on this machine. Actually I do most of this type of development on the PC in Visual Studio 6.0 and port it late in the development cycle. This makes it very easy to debug and develop the code. I don't like Windows CE or Windows xxx that much. But I was around when all programs had to support different keyboards, printers, graphics cards etc so I appreciate what Windows have give us. Also most of my customers wants tools that they can run on a Windows platform. If I had the choice I would have used Linux for most of my higher level work. Its more fun to work in. It has a nice and clean, cinsistand architecture. Its a nice community in the Linux world that help each other out and freely share information much as we do here on the pic list. But as I sad most of my clients wants Windows so that's it. Have to live... I also agree with others commenting on this subject that the Palm probably has a better architecture. I have tried it out in the beginning but cant judge this for my self without doing a real project on the platform. I sure don't like the Pocket PC environment. It's just to much flexibility which leads to instability of the system. You see this in Windows as well. You still have to reset a CE system from time to time.... Many apps on the unit are bulky and slow and don't behave very well. But if that it is what a client wants, well, give it to him and make it work the best you can. If you don't have a client. choose the one that give your self most pleasure during the development process. /Ake -----Ursprungligt meddelande----- Fr=E5n: pic microcontroller discussion list [mailto:PICLIST@MITVMA.MIT.EDU]F=F6r John Pearson Skickat: den 23 april 2004 20:18 Till: PICLIST@MITVMA.MIT.EDU =C4mne: Re: ] PalmOS vs Pocket PC.....Palm Yes, me too. I don't really want to exclude the Pocket PC. I never realized how affordable they can be on Ebay, used. You can find a decent older Pocket PC w/ about 32 meg, CF slot and maybe a bit more for well under $100.00. There are some very reputable Ebay dealers selling some PPCs with warranty too. Can it be service packs for the 98 environment that may be needed? /Ake Could be Ake, although I just did an update but most components seemed to be Outlook security issues. To be fair, I went ahaead and ordered the CD. I downloaded the PalmOS Developers Suite from Palm. It installed flawlessly and works great. The Microsoft Embedded Visual Tools 3.0 however, does not install on my computer. Before I give up on the MS visual tools, if anyone can suggest why I can't install it, please help. I get many error messages like this: Setup tried to create a path 'C:\Windows CE Toolset\Htmlhelp\' and 'WCE\HTMLHELP\EVC\WCEATL.CHM' After all that I get "cesdkhlp.dll was unable to register itself in the registry" "Install failed".
