    No, it was I who was missing something.  Like half my brain.

    I've done that with 16C54s.  I don't know whether the oscillators
    in other PICs are the same, though... So if you try it and the
    oscillator doesn't start up, you'll need to buffer the CLKOUT
    signal on its way to the second PIC.
