Would chaning the resistor value lower/higher the current consumption?  If
not, than I can use lower valued resistors.

I used a 4.7K for my system.  I think that the higher the resistance, the
slower your baud rate is going to be.  Best bet is to put it on a scope and
try a couple different resistors.  watch for rounding on the corners.
