I would like to thank everyone for taking their time and answer.  The MAX323
is going to work wonderfully for me (I have downloaded the datasheet).
About the pull-up resistors, can I use 100K for low power consumption or
should 10K be fine?

I did this recently, using 2 MAX323 chips to isolate the 2 ports.  The
MAX323's went between the pic and the MAX232.  This also gave me the
advantage of being able to select which port I wanted to listen to at any
given time, and sending was isolated as well.  Remember to use pullup
resistors between the 323 chips and the pic!
