It probably doesn't have to be particularly smooth. I'm finding that my
square wave is playing absolute havoc on the AGC stage of the tape recorder,
and I get major distortion and a lot of clicks and crackles when my pulse
starts and stops. Hence wanting something closer-to-sine.
