It does tend to ramble into other architectures (PIC17, 12 bit cores, etc.) (that was one of the reasons I liked it, but it's less than ideal for an intro class that's going to focus on A particular chip.) What you're really looking for is something along the lines of "Introduction to microcontrollers and embedded programming, featuring the PIC18F452", or something like that?
