Thanks to all who responded. The higher gate voltage is useful if the control supply is 24V for example or if it comes from a self oscillating converter with no regulation, or when the part is used in special applications (telephony f.ex). Vgs >= 30V does not mean threshold voltage >12V. For example I could use mosfets with Vgs = 350V (are there such things ?) for simpler automation directly off mains.
