I went and watched one today after getting the data from http://www.heavens-above.com/ . Are these common everywhere ? How about a navigation system that uses a few Iridium flares to locate its position ? (just for fun) using a ccd camera or similar hooked to a computer ;-) (Hint: take your location with a grain of salt if you live in a place larger than about 300 meters across, or use gps. In my case the groundpath was given as a few km to the east but it went directly overhead - I nearly missed it - the flare lasts about a second at most - however it is very bright, brighter than Venus).
