my level converter sits in a nice iwhack style transparent blue box with a green power LED and running of a 9V battery the only things I wish I had done are put a multi pole switch in so i could select between normal and loopback mode (nothing like making sute the computer is working and the max 232) and putting monitoring lights on the data lines (presumablly the 5v serial in side) and perhaps provision for external power. as it is though i am in the 10s of hours of run time off a single 9v battery -----Original Message----- From: pic microcontroller discussion list [mailto:PICLIST@MITVMA.MIT.EDU]On Behalf Of James Newton, Host Sent: Saturday, April 17, 2004 7:56 AM To: PICLIST@MITVMA.MIT.EDU Subject: Re: [EE:]TTL to/ From rs232 for 16F628 circuit I agree that it is best to keep the level converter separate and use it only when needed. There are many TTL level "RS232" applications. E.g. stuff connected to a BASIC Stamp, or another microcontroller. Why add the circuit (and it's noise, power draw, etc...) when you don't always need it? Just keep a TTL<>RS232 level converter handy for when it is required.
