Hi, I've used the Garmin 16 (not the A version) on a few computers, even on a 486 laptop, and not had any problem with it. I've used it in both NMEA and binary mode. Switching from NMEA to binary is a bit of a hassle though. I would guess that your problem more likely lies in the speed setting on your port or other port parameters. The GPS 16 operates at 9600, but the 16A may operate at a faster rate due to the increased data. If you have wired the plug connector, I would recheck your wiring and wiring assumptions. All I can suggest is that you re-read the manual.
