For roughing I use tooling with carbide inserts, and for finish cuts I use HSS tools which I've ground on a bench grinder. You will get a better finish with HSS on the smaller lathes or mills than you would with carbide. On a big machine the opposite is true, because the machines are rigid enough and have the hp required to take deeper cuts, which works better with carbide than they do with HSS.
