I am still looking for an idea myslef (got one, but won't share it!).

Maybe an AVR-based PIC programmer to lure those dark-siders over?

One thing I realy want: a very low cost, low speed logical analyser.
Just log a few pins to the PC, 100k samples/sec would be OK, even lower
would still be usefull. Maybe use some compression to fit 100ks in
115k2. And some nice matching PC software of course. And write it in
Python so the Linux boys are not left out :)
