if you are looking for a simple solution, you may want to look at Magnatek..
I have several of theirs that are RS232.  There are also models designed as a
keyboard wedge in whickyou simple look on the net for some ideas on a
keyboard interface.. The RS232 versions are standard RS232 and  would be easier to
implement with a pic
