There's considerable market pressure on D-sized performance. A "D-sized" NiMH battery can't differ that much in performance from what is available to consumers, either individually or on a volume to volume comparison, regardless of number of cells or exact configuration... A D-NiMH spec sheet says 163g and 32x61mm, so 250 of them is less than 100 lbs of battery, in a package about less than half a meter square and 6 inches thick (sorry for mixing my units :-), which I didn't think was nearly enough to be effective for electric propulsion. (OTHO, I haven't been paying attention at all to the hybrid cars. Maybe that's the whole optimization that has occurred, and you need a lot less battery than you'd expect if you're only using it for "assist"... Neat, if so.)
