The venerable AMD "Lance" 10mbit ethernet controller, perhaps the 2nd
"integrated" ethernet controller ever to be implemented, would give you
a TDR value (in clock ticks) in the case of certain types of errors
(excessive collisions, I think.)  I actually used it once to try to
find a cable problem, and was very impressed how close it came...
