One of the early UPS manufacturers (Cuesta Systems) was here in San Luis Obispo. They included connectors on the rear panel for an external battery. I think they had to remove these when shipping to Canada because of safety concerns. The temperature rise of the unit was limited by the capacity of the internal battery (the battery would go dead before the unit got too hot). With an unknown sized external battery overheating was possible. Other than this concern, I can't think of a reason to not use an external battery. Testing or the addition of an overtemp thermostat might be appropriate. Harold > Can anyone think of a reason not to attach a car battery in place of the > sealed battery in a battery backup system?
