Certainly no higher than your monitor's refresh rate. I'm set at 75Hz,
so I'd get about 9 bytes/sec with a single flashing box. The Timex
Datalink watches can get 1 or 2 bytes per refresh by using bit lines:

Of course, this would require more sight than a single
phototransistor.
