Range will depend on receiver used and how it's mounted. 3-pin
IS1U60 types are cheap, common, easy to use. I'd use one over
a discrete circuit unless it was very short range or wanted to save
power

So are the canned ones in appliances like TVs and VCRs. Well
worth scavenging for them in junk. All the ones I've seen are 3 pins,
5V supply, and most were Sharp
