I don't think six hours is going to be enough time to go very far -- getting through Customs is going to eat up quite a bit of that going both out and back into the secured areas. You may also check with your airline, you may already be scheduled to go "out" through Customs as your flight comes in, and back "in" through Customs in another area of the airport, depending on where your flight's gates are and the design of the airport. I haven't been into/through Miami in quite some time, but it's not a super-modern airport... and a lot of the security changes after 9/11 have tended to chop up concourses into strange mixes of secured and unsecured.
