Hi John

A long shot, and late, but am stripping a XJ4C Xerox deskjet printer and
was surprised to find a small peristaltic pump driven off the carrige
motor, when I remembered your mail.

It's used to drain excess ink from the printead to waste.
So, if there's one nearby..
