I suspect the lower capacity ones may not be so bad, but I have 4 sets of high capcity AA's (raning from 2000 to 2300mAh) and I find that they have little charge left in them after just a couple of weeks of sitting on a shelf. I would certainly go for alkalines made by a reputable manufacturer in an IR remote. FWIW I have had 1 AA NiMH cell leak, an older 1200mAh unit.
