When I ordered some samples from microchip (to experiment with
self-programming) a while back, I got an email from my employer's
microchip rep shortly thereafter, asking whether I needed any
particular assistance with the new chips.  (This wasn't out of the
blue; we'd met, and I'd explained that my interest in PICs wouldn't
translate into big orders from said employer, and she gave me a list of
who was using what where. here, and so on...  So I'm happy and rather
favorably impressed.)
Sample requests aren't as anonymous as you might think...
