The board is 2" x 1/2" but the PIC connections are crammed up near one end in about 1/2" square with no room to spare for a well layed out contact area. I had tried attaching several clips to various parts of the board, but that would be too slow. Fear of the Vpp clip slipping and shorting to something was also on my mind ;-) I think I can use one of the recommended SOIC clips (exactly what I was looking for) to program the chip.
