I'm not sure of the details, but mostly there seems to be a tradeoff between ease of insertion/removal, vs reliability. "Everyone" seems to like gold plated "machined pin" (?) sockets for high reliability, but I assure you they are a real PITA to get chips into and out of (especially for high pin counts.)
