Yeah, I wanted to be able to remote control the light box as well as
have an internal control, so it seemed to make sense to go with MIDI
and have the internal PIC send it too.

Nope, I'm still stuck.  I wish my ICEPIC daughterboard would get back
from repair so I could just see what the hell is going on in there!

I tried versions of everyone's suggestions to no avail.  Apparently
something is amiss elsewhere in the code.  I'll keep hacking.
