I believe that Wouter's point is that you can copy over the ZPL software and run it out an empty serial port, to see how much time your actual software takes to download your actual target pic. Since the ZPL doesn't get any feedback from the PIC, you don't actually need to have a PIC (or any other hardware) connected to do the timing. Cute.
