Andrea: As far as I know there is no preferred way to do this, at least not from an engineering viewpoint. However, it is slightly easier to plug the male pins (on the plug-in board) into the female headers on the main board. Also, if the pins were on the main board, it becomes much easier to plug one or more into a finger tip when working in tight spaces. (Don't laugh until you've done it!) Finally, if the pins are exposed all the time it is much easier to bend and short one or more of them, or to short them with a tool when working. Roy J.
