What would be the purpose for doing this? If you are doing it to record for tournament or competition, then video recognition has the following advantages: 1. You can play back the video any one can easily see what happened. They might not comprehend, and there fore, trust what the computer senses. 2. You can take a snapshot when the timer is pressed. This would signal to read the piece positions. 3. You can use almost any chess set. The computer would just have to LEARN the shapes.
