IR reflection from the bottom of the pieces may be sufficient if you
have a transmitter/receiver pair under each square. From a known
starting arrangement, it shouldn't be necessary to have each piece
uniquely identify itself.

Since a piece will 'disappear' from one square and 'appear' on another
square, you know which piece was moved and where it is now. (This may
not cover all of the cases that can arise but I think it will.)
