Believe it or not, some of the newer versions of the older PIC16C5X baseline parts are touted by Microchip to run at 40 MHz. This is in the PIC16C5X EPROM/ROM-Based 8-bit CMOS Microcontroller Series Data Sheet (DS30453D): Operation between 20 to 40 MHz requires the following: VDD between 4.5V. and 5.5V OSC1 externally driven OSC2 not connected HS mode Commercial temperatures Devices qualified for 40 MHz operation have -40 designation (ex: PIC16C54C-40/P). Interesting, I never thought I'd see this day with the older baseline parts.
