I was very surprised myself that this is not true anymore.
Believe it or not, some of the newer versions of the older PIC16C5X baseline
parts are touted by Microchip to run at 40 MHz.

This is in the PIC16C5X EPROM/ROM-Based 8-bit CMOS Microcontroller Series
Data Sheet (DS30453D):

Operation between 20 to 40 MHz requires the following:
  VDD between 4.5V. and 5.5V
  OSC1 externally driven
  OSC2 not connected
  HS mode
  Commercial temperatures

Devices qualified for 40 MHz operation have -40 designation (ex:
PIC16C54C-40/P).



Interesting, I never thought I'd see this day with the older baseline parts.
