Rapid Electronics are good prices all-round, much better prices than
RS/Farnell for most stuff, especially PICs.
Crownhill seem to be best prices for PICs and most up to date in the range
they carry.
CPC are good for consumer-type stuff and batteries.
RS and Maplin are good if you are in a rush, have a trade counter/shop
nearby and cost isn't critical!
RS and Farnell are best for the sheer volume and diversity of stock
available, that's about it!

Have you contacted FTDI directly to ask them?  They are based in Glasgow,
so should be able to suggest a UK distributor if they can't sample to you
directly.
