I practically scream at some of the build and packaging complexity that comes with many of the open source projects. With absolute assembly, all you need is the basic assembler and you get right to a hex file. No linker complexity, no library versioning problems. etc... Ideal for publishing a project for hobbyists. Less ideal for commercial development where you want to reuse your own code with minimal effort, but still has the simplicity advantage.
