There are the odd occassions when it's good to have a Plan B. I was offered a job once and simply couldn't get the PIC I wanted (no stock, long lead time). Having already had my toe in the water re AVR it was fairly simple to do that job with them, and it paid off. Over and above the time taken to get up to speed, so well worth it. My AVR supplier was also able to let me have small quantities of SOT, which my PIC couldn't have done. That said, these days I make sure I have enough PICs and SX for foreseeable needs and haven't used an AVR for some time -- http://www.piclist.com#nomail Going offline?
