"Cache ram" used on 486 motherboards was usually static ram, and is
still available at low prices from places like jameco.
(Ie Cypress CY7C199-35PC, 32kx8, Jameco #242376)
You can find old dram chips there too, which means half the
address lines to drive (but you'll have to handle refresh.)

Serially accessible RAM in that size is pretty rare.
