I am in the same situation. I have 2 of these and working software that I wrote for a different HD44780 LCD, but cannot make it work with the BG Micro display. Unfortunately I don't have a solution for you, but can offer you the piece of mind that you're not the only one who can't make this LCD work :) I remember reading the datasheet for this LCD's HD44780 'compatible' controller to try to find slight nuances that would cause my software not to work with this display. I didn't find any, but it's very possible I overlooked something.
