Although I have been curious about the connections in places like
australia.  It seems to me that going from there to asia, to europe, to
the US would take just as long as the satellite hops would.  I imagine
they have a few fast landlines, lots of caches, and load
balancing/traffic shaping so time sensitive info goes via land and
non-time sensitive but bandwidth expensive goes via satellite.

Of course, it also helps that they've had phone lines underwater for
eons and it doesn't take much to turn a copper pair into a T1 equivilant
or better, nevermind the fiber lines.  The network connection charts
I've seen for north america and michigan in particular are impressive.
I just wish we had more 1Gbps lines to/from Ann Arbor.  :-)
