I've had HyperTerminal cause GPF's and take down the OS on too many Windows
and HyperTerminal versions to rely on it when testing devices. (haven't
tried it in a couple years so maybe it's better now).

I've been using Tera Term for years and don't recall it ever closing on
disconnect with serial connections. It does close on disconnect by default
with telnet but, that is an option you can disable in the TCP/IP settings
dialog.

The main reasons I like Tera Term are:
Open source
Good documentation
Extensive macro language
Highly customizable (although some settings need to be manually changed in
an ini file)
