yep, that works well but like you said, fading is an issue. I cant recall the manufacturer I got them off but, I had some nice cable tie flags, just like an ordinary cable tie but with a flat portion at the ratchet end to write on. faded a little over about 5-8yrs but was still quite readable. I have also seen small tags designed to go with whatever cable tie you wish for labelling too, they sit flat agains the side of the cable sheath and run along the length of it. wish I could be more precise with locales etc, sorry. The plasticizes in blue Cat5 cable caused the marker ink to diffuse into a blurry outline over the 7 years since I first pulled the cable. I've seen the same problem in white, cream, green and yellow cables, all made by DIFFERENT manufacturers. The only common factor is that all the jackets were PVC. The one teflon cable I have didn't retain the ink, but the electrical tape I labeled it with is still holding on fine, but with a bit of blur 4 years later. And with handling, the Sharpie (R) ink rubbed off the cables, but not the white electrical tape. I'm now labeling all my new pulls with a Sharpie and white electrical tape. When attached like a flag (glue to glue) it seems to last for years.
