I am not sure it you are Labeling cables or individual wires but the best
solution I know of is a labeling system made by BRADY. it is for this purpose. It
is pricey but it is made for professional use and will last forever.

The Poor Man's way, (aka, my way) is to use one made by Brother. They are
available at Office Max, Staples, Office Depot, or most any large office supply
firm. You can get multiple color labels and can print anything you want on
them. This one will not work on small wires and I suggest that you use clear
packaging tape over the label as it is not designed to be wrapped around a surface
and will peel.
