About 8 or 9 years ago, I found something that worked well for my situation, a Computone Intelliserver. It has a network jack, 16 serial ports and works in both directions. IOW, you can telnet to the box and obtain a serial port from a pool (or specify a certain port if desired). It would also answer a modem connected to the box's serial port and then you could telnet out from there to access the network. It was somewhat unique as far as terminal servers go in that it could do an automatic "reverse" telnet upon answering the phone. This allowed me to run PPP services on a Linux box sitting on the lan without having the modems directly connected to the Linux box. IIRC, later firmware for the Intelliserver could do the PPP connection itself. michael brown -- http://www.piclist.com hint: The list server can filter out subtopics (like ads or off topics) for you.
