I don't have the circuit handy, but I've seen on go-kart engines where the
pickup is a transistor that is taped to the spark plug lead.  I seem to
remember that the base lead is clipped off, and the inductive 'kick' from
the spark plug is enough to trigger the transistor.  No tapping into the
points needed.
