I am in bank 0, that I made sure of first before asking the question.

bcf  status,RP)
bcf  status,RP1

ensures that bank 0 is set, and I do see that the bits are cleared in the
status register as well.  I didn't post the entire code seqment, but
essentially all that is in there is the setup of the ports
