I'm not sure if you are discouraged or not Olin, but let me try to give you some positive feedback to help you out. Don't give up. Perhaps you could specify to users of your programmer that they need to keep the cable length short. You mentioned in your post that you were using a cable that is 20 inches long. I don't recall from your original post -- I'm not sure if you are using *round* twisted pair wire cable or flat cable. Maybe some experiments in the cable type would prove useful. If you need some help doing some ICSP testing I would offer to spend some of my time with your programmer. Just let me know.
