Regarding comment about external magnetism and hard drives:

I realize this is comparing apples versus oranges, but back in high school
we did some experiments (cursory and unscientific) with floppy disks and
magnets. It was very surprising to me how difficult it actually was to
compromise the data on the disk.

(No hard drive on that old IBM PC -- had to boot the OS with a floppy)
