The only display driver I use is the ICM7211 for glass LCDs The suggestion was more about using a multiplexer, and the MAX was just an example of a multiplexer. The OP didn't say what arrangement the LEDs are in, there'll scope for all kinds of logic If it's a one-off, go for the MAX sample.
