I was not au fait with MAX supply problems. The only one I use
regularly is the 232, and every man and his dog sells those.
The only display driver I use is the ICM7211 for glass LCDs

The suggestion was more about using a multiplexer, and the MAX
was just an example of a multiplexer. The OP didn't say what
arrangement the LEDs are in, there'll scope for all kinds of logic

If it's a one-off, go for the MAX sample. Could get one of these too
