I am not familiar with the demo board you mention, but are you inverting the TX and RC lines? Without this inversion you will get garbage only. This may be your problem. A Google search for "picuart" will get you links to several sites that have my PIC UART tutorial/program. Go to the section that explains the need for signal inversion. You will also find wiring diagrams for cabling between the PIC and the PC. I hope this helps. Fr.
