This looks like a baud rate problem.  I've also noticed that HyperTerm
sometimes can try to emulate the more fancy terminals where certain escape
sequences or whatever can put it into strange modes.  In addition to making
sure you are using the correct baud rate, stop bits, and parity, make sure
HyperTerm is not trying to emulate a fancy terminal like a VT-100.
